JACKSON, Wyo. — Reade Dornan is running for another term as School Board Trustee, with the proposed high school addition at the top of her priorities. After four years on the board, Dornan said she wants to help finish a project she and fellow trustees have worked on for years.
According to Dornan, the high school has about 980 students in a building designed for 500. She’s hoping to finish the lobbying she’s been doing for the addition, and wants to move quickly before construction costs rise even further.
Other priorities of Dornan’s are raising awareness of the Education Foundation of Jackson Hole, which helps students with needs including mental health care, dental care, meals and making more time for reading during the school day. A former professor who taught teachers how to teach reading for 35 years, Dornan said students should have opportunities for sustained reading.
“Reading whole books changes the whole brain,” Dornan told Buckrail in an interview. “We need more time slots allocated to reading, perhaps even free reading … [for students in grades] K through 12.”
Dornan went on to say that serving on the board has been fun and keeps her close to the students. “The best thing about [serving] is being close to the kids,” Dornan said.
There are three seats available and four candidates running for School Board Trustee in the upcoming election. The other candidates running are Stephan Abrams, Keith Gingery and Ashley Sinclair.
