JACKSON, Wyo. — What a visually memorable year 2024 was!

This year, the Jackson Hole community saw a lot: wildfires, the Northern Lights (multiple times), collapsed roads, snowstorms, countless elk and moose and the sad ending to one of the ecosystem’s most inspiring wildlife stories. Through it all, Buckrail readers sent in their best shots of the region’s wild splendor. Below, see some of our favorites.

The death of grizzly bear 399 was an emotional time for the Jackson community. Readers sent in scores of treasured photos of the beloved ursine matriarch and her offspring. For more of those photos, see Buckrail’s SNAPPED from Oct. 24.

On a happier note, 2024 provided some truly epic night skies, thanks to multiple appearances by the aurora borealis. Those nights also prompted many readers to share their images.

The Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS also made an ultra-rare appearance over the Tetons, leading to some stunning captures by readers.

As usual, wildlife photography dominated the Buckrail inbox this year. Moose photos were particularly spectacular. Two shots stood out for their depiction of animals navigating the human-built environment in town.

And Grizzly 399 wasn’t the only photogenic bear. Check out this grizzly flashing its teeth for the camera.

In an area this beautiful, sometimes it’s harder to take a bad photo than a good one. This photo of the valley captures the vastness of the inspiration available to local photographers.
