VICTOR, Idaho — Teton County Idaho Search and Rescue (TCISAR) located two snowmobilers that were reported missing Wednesday evening after failing to return from Henderson Canyon, an area in the southwest portion of Teton Valley.

At 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, a search and rescue team made contact with both parties at the Henderson Canyon trailhead. Both parties were able to ride out of the backcountry with their own power and declined medical aid with TCISAR.

Mitch Golden, Public Information Officer for the Teton County Sheriff’s Office, told Buckrail that the two snowmobilers got separated last evening during the heavy snow. Both snowmobilers spent the night out on the mountain taking necessary steps to shelter from the snow storm; one took shelter in a tree well and the other built a fire.

TCISAR contacted families to report that “everyone was accounted for – safe and sound.”

TCISAR advises backcountry users to recreate safely, have a plan and have the necessary gear to spend extended time afield.

According to the Backcountry Avalanche Forecast from the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center, destructive natural avalanches are likely due to last night’s heavy snow and strong wind.
