JACKSON, Wyo. — The National Weather Service (NWS) and Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (BTAC) have issued an avalanche warning that will remain in effect through 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19. Human-triggered avalanches large enough to bury people are very likely to occur on most aspects and elevations in the backcountry. Avoid traveling on or below slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

According to the Backcountry Avalanche Forecast from BTAC, very large, destructive natural avalanches are likely as buried weak layers were rapidly loaded with heavy snow and strong wind last night.

The avalanche warning is in effect for the Tetons, Snake River, Salt River, Wyoming, Gros Ventre and Togwotee Ranges.

Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center reports an avalanche danger rating of “High” above 6,000 feet in the Greys River zone, “High” above 7,500 feet in the Teton zone and “High” above 9,000 feet in the Togwotee Pass area.
