JACKSON, Wyo. — For those wanting to hit the trails and camp over Labor Day weekend, the U.S. Forest Service – Caribou-Targhee National Forest has shared trail and dispersed camping safety tips.
The Forest Service reminds hikers to share their plan and expected return time with friends and family. Hikers in the backcountry are advised to stick to marked trails, stay hydrated and pack a map, compass or GPS device, according to the Forest Service. Additionally, the agency recommends wearing appropriate footwear and being prepared for changing weather conditions.
When choosing to camp off the beaten path, be sure to follow local regulations and guidelines for dispersed camping sites, according to the Forest Service. Campers are to select a durable surface for a campsite that is at least 200 feet away from water sources.
When camping, keep all scented items in bear-resistant food lockers or in a hard-sided vehicle with doors locked and windows closed, day and night. Items include food, drinks, garbage, toiletries, clean and dirty cookware, stoves, grills, coolers, empty or full food containers and pet food and bowls.
“Remember to pack out all trash and leave no trace,” the Forest Service said via Facebook on Thursday, Aug. 29. “Safety first ensures a fun and memorable hike! Enjoy the solitude of nature!”
