JACKSON, Wyo. — Warmer weather means elk are migrating to higher ground in search of greener vegetation.

On April 16, Buckrail’s photographer Nick Sulzer saw a portion of Jackson’s elk herd moving off of the National Elk Refuge.

With snow still covering the mountains, elk will make the slow journey to their summer grounds by following sprouting grasses and shrubs.

Sulzer captured this herd crossing the Gros Ventre Road near Kelly.

According to the National Park Service, elk primarily seek out grasses, forbs and aspen sprouts as their main food source during spring months.
