WYOMING – Highway crews are still cleaning up after two massive pileups on Interstate 80 Sunday afternoon brought traffic to a halt.

At this time, Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers are still investigating two separate multiple-vehicle crashes involving more than 100 vehicles in all.

The wrecks have closed travel on I-80 in both directions between milepost 181 and 184—in the Wamsutter-Rawlins area.

Troopers arriving on scene at approximately 3:39 p.m. on Sunday found some 50 or so vehicles still piling into one another, and another 50-plus at a nearby location. Authorities have confirmed three deaths and multiple injuries at this time.

Near whiteout conditions are being blamed initially for the crashes. WYDOT hopes to have the interstate open sometime Tuesday afternoon. This is the 55th time this winter that a portion of Interstate 80 has been closed.
