JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) shared a warning to its social media channels on Thursday alerting locals to a phone scammer who has been using a TCSO phone number in an attempt to make money.
“A current phone scammer is calling Teton County residents from our non-emergency phone line, 307-733-2331, about unpaid citations,” TCSO said via Facebook. “They are asking for payment from PayPal, Venmo or gift cards to satisfy the fine or a warrant will be issued. This is a scam!”
The sheriff’s office also shared tips for sussing out phone scammers.
“Remember: Phone scammers can be very convincing,” TCSO said in the post. “They use intimidation tactics to scare you into quickly sharing personal and financial information. They will pressure you to send them money through payment apps or gift card numbers.”
The agency reminds the community that TCSO will never contact people by phone or text to collect money or financial information, nor will they every ask people to pay fines via Venmo, PayPal or gift cards.
Those with questions about a scam call or text should call TCSO dispatch at (307) 733-2331.
