JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Hole High School Speech and Debate Team made a 2nd place showing at the Riverton Invitational last weekend.

Competition was fierce with 19 schools attending and 400 total event entries. Jackson, under the coaching of Londe Gagnon and Peggy Gagnon, earned an overall 26 points for the team sweepstakes. Worland took 1st place with 41.

Jackson seniors led the way in Riverton. Team captain Darcy Mueller had a rewarding meet, finishing 4h in Extemporaneous Speaking. Maleah Tuttle took 3rd in the same event. River Gayton had an impressive 2nd place finish in Informative Speaking.

Junior Josh Hansen and sophomore Will Aepli tied for 7th place in Congressional Debate. Sophomores Lily Briggs and Jesiah Coates joined them in the final round of the event.

Coates went on to partner with sophomore Carter Worcester in Public Forum Debate where they finished in 3rd place. They spent the weekend debating whether or not the United States should increase its use of nuclear energy for commercial energy production.

Freshman Nicole Checker made it to the semi-final round of Poetry Interpretation, and junior Preston Harmon made it to the semi-finals of Program Oral Interpretation.

“We have just one regular season tournament left before our culminating state and districts tournaments,” coach Londe Gagnon said. “We learned a lot this weekend and continue to grow as a team. I am excited to see how we can all come together as a group to make a strong showing at these upcoming meets.”
