JACKSON, Wyo. — Looks like Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer wasn’t the only one to catch sight of a unique snow phenomenon in the area this week.

Buckrail readers sent in photos of snow rollers, also known as snow bales and snow donuts, which formed following strong winds on Sunday night.

Readers expressed their preference for the term snow bales for this phenomenon, which occurs when strong wind blows wet, sticky snow forcefully enough that it tumbles into itself and creates a hollow cylinder.

“I have horses,” reader Mary Schmitt said via email. “When I showed my photos of these to my horse friends, they all said they look like a round bale. So I love that name. I have lived here for over 30 years and I’ve never seen this. I was enchanted.”
