Riot Act casting for ‘The Normal Heart’ next week

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Riot Act Inc. announced auditions next week for one of its most ambitious productions to date.

Casting for the Tony Award-winning play The Normal Heart is underway. The production company will need to fill several male acting roles—a “tricky” challenge in Jackson, according to the show’s director Andrew Munz.

“We’re looking for eight men aged 18-50 (there’s only one straight main character), and one woman between 30-50,” Munz said. “In addition to the play, we’re going to be doing a lot of LGBTQ history and AIDS awareness as a cast, so I’m looking for a really great core of people who want to get involved and make a difference in the community.”

Interested actors don’t need to prepare anything, but a headshot and monologue would be helpful.

Written by Larry Kramer, The Normal Heart debuted on Broadway in 2011. Though the two-act play’s run was short, it was nominated for five Tony Awards, winning three including Best Revival, and Best Featured Actor and Featured Actress.” It was later adapted for film in 2014.

The searing drama is largely an autobiographical look at Kramer’s life in NYC during the early 1980s. It explores public and private indifference to the AIDS plague and one man’s lonely fight to awaken the world to the crisis as he struggles to confront the personal toll AIDS takes in his own life when his lover dies of the disease.

“It’s one hell of a play and I can’t wait to showcase it to the town,” Munz said, adding that he believes it’s the first time the work will play anywhere in Wyoming.

Performances will run at the Pink Garter Theatre on October 10-13, 2018—four evening performances with an additional matinee on the 13th.  The show will be directed by Munz with Charley Daveler as stage manager.

Auditions will take place on Wednesday August 1; Thursday, August 2; and Monday, August 6. Auditions will take place in Dancers’ Workshop Studio 2 in the Center for the Arts from 7:30 to 9:00pm.
