Lightning(?) strikes twice in Rock Springs

SWEETWATER COUNTY, WYO – Lightning storms like the beaut last night are a joy to watch but they do make wildland firefighters a little nervous. Case in point, last night’s dazzler sparked at least one small fire—this one in Sweetwater County.

Power was restored shortly after firefighters extinguished power pole lit by last night’s lightning storm. (SCSO)

Sweetwater County deputy sheriffs and firefighters were advised of a power pole on fire early this morning in the Purple Sage area west of Rock Springs. It resulted in a power outage for residences and businesses in the area between Highway 191 South and Kanda.

The burning pole was located north of Interstate 80 near the intersection of Purple Sage Road and old Highway 30.

Sheriff Mike Lowell said the fire, which destroyed not only the power pole but burned through a significant area of surrounding brush, was extinguished by Fire District #1 firefighters. There were no injuries reported, and no property was damaged aside from the power pole.

Officials say power has now been restored to the area.

Second fire

First responders should have stayed right where they were after extinguishing the power pole. Another fire was reported in the Purple Sage Road area later today.

At around 3:30pm, a fire began at a mobile home at 45 Purple Sage Road, #27. Emergency responders were notified and the lone occupant, the woman who lives at #27 with her husband, was able to escape.

Lowell said county deputies and firefighters from Sweetwater County Fire District #1 raced to the scene and were able to extinguish the blaze. The residence, however, was a total loss.

At the scene, several people were examined for smoke inhalation by ambulance service personnel, but not transported to Memorial Hospital in Rock Springs. No other injuries were reported.

As of 5:15pm, Fire District #1 personnel were still on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
