WILSON, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) began enforcing new safety restrictions over Teton Pass today as its new WY22 Safe Pass self-certification program officially debuted.
New signs along the highway were unveiled, prompting drivers of recreational vehicles, drivers towing trailers and drivers of vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds or more to enroll in the educational program or face fines of up to $1,000.
“Beyond fines and statutory penalties, we want to make one thing clear: ignoring these safety materials and warnings could put your life, or someone else’s, at risk,” Wyoming Highway Patrol Captain Marc Russell said in a Thursday press release. “Whether you commute over the pass every day or are just traveling through, take a few minutes to review the materials.”
Enrollment opened to drivers on Sept. 21; WYDOT shared that more than 1,840 people have already self-certified. The process is expected to take approximately 10 minutes to complete, instructing drivers on topics including proper gear selection, brake fade protocols, pre-trip inspections, and trailer/weight restrictions.

The program makes use of maps, videos and more to encourage safer driving practices on the steep, winding road.
