JACKSON, Wyo. — When temperatures dip below zero, nothing beats a cozy night indoors. But if the power goes out, a warm room can turn into an icebox all too quickly.

The National Weather Service recommends taking the following steps to stay warm if the power goes out:

  1. Close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat
  2. Close off rooms to avoid wasting heat
  3. Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing
  4. Eat and drink: food provides energy to warm the body
  5. Avoid caffeine and alcohol
  6. Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors to prevent heat loss

Those who turn to other heat sources, like a fireplace or wood-burning, are advised to be vigilant of carbon monoxide levels. Follow these tips to avoid frostbite in cold weather, and these tips to keep pipes from freezing.
