JACKSON, Wyo. — On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (BTAC) increased avalanche danger from “considerable” to “high” across the Tetons.

“Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist,” the report reads.

According to the BTAC, continued snowfall and wind are stressing a reactive snowpack. Those out in the backcountry are very likely to trigger an avalanche today on most steep slopes, both in areas exposed to the wind and sheltered from it.

BTAC reminds recreationists that avalanches can be triggered remotely, meaning from below, above and to the sides of steeper terrain.

“Travel in or below avalanche terrain is not recommended today,” BTAC writes.

Dangerous conditions also exist in the Salt River and Wyoming Ranges, the Snake River Range and Togwotee Pass.
