JACKSON, Wyo. — Winter has returned to the valley this week, bringing all of the pluses and minuses of fresh pow.
Heavy snow is expected in the Tetons today and tomorrow. Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center’s (BTAC) Thursday morning forecast advises that avalanche danger will rise to “moderate” today as new snow arrives along with strong, gusty winds.
“Heightened avalanche conditions will exist as new snow and wind create unstable conditions above 8,500 feet,” BTAC’s forecast reads. “Human-triggered avalanches up to 2 feet deep could become likely by the end of the day in steep, upper elevation terrain. Use caution around steep, wind-affected slopes, and watch for drifting snow and shooting cracks.”
In addition to high-elevation snow, the valley floor is in for snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches by Friday evening, according to a National Weather Service (NWS) winter weather advisory issued for Jackson, Afton, Alpine, Star Valley Ranch and Thayne.
“Travel could be difficult,” the advisory states. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Warmer air and ground temperatures will allow some of the snow to melt, especially on roads. However, drivers should be prepared for slick spots, including on bridges and during periods of heavier snowfall rates. Slow down and use caution while traveling.”
Teton Pass is scheduled to close this morning for avalanche mitigation.
