JACKSON, Wyo. — Winter isn’t over just yet, despite the warm spell that enveloped Jackson for the past couple of weeks.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter storm watch this morning, in effect from 11 p.m. tonight until 6 p.m. on Friday, April 3. The forecast specifically involves the Tetons, Gros Ventres and Yellowstone National Park.
“Heavy snow possible,” NWS stated. “Total snow accumulations between 12 and 18 inches possible with locally up to 24 inches in the western slopes of the Tetons. In northern Yellowstone Park, 6 to 10 inches of snow is possible. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.”
NWS advises that travel over Teton Pass and Togwotee Pass could be very difficult under these conditions. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has planned a closure of Teton Pass on Thursday morning to perform avalanche mitigation work.
The valley floor is likely to get a little snow, too. The current NWS forecast for Jackson calls for accumulations of up to 2 inches on Thursday with potential for a further half-inch on Friday.
