DRIGGS, Idaho — April 30 is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the countless animals waiting for loving homes. PAWS is celebrating National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day by offering half-priced adoption fees at their shelter until May 4. Ready to find a new best friend? Local shelters are a great place to start!
To ensure each shelter search and pet adoption process goes smoothly, PAWS is offering the following tips:
MEET YOUR MATCH
Many people who want to adopt a pet know what they’re looking for, but they find it hard to choose from all the different types of animals in shelters. A good rule of thumb? Choose a pet that’s a personality match. Those who are energetic and love running might consider a lively rescue dog to be a jogging partner. More relaxed people might find that a calm cat or an older pet might be just right.
PUT A PET PLAN IN PLACE
Before bringing a shelter pet home, make sure the home is prepared for their arrival. Get together all the supplies a pet will need, like a collar, leash, ID tags, crate, toys, water and food bowls, and food. Check with the shelter about a pet’s feeding routine and the type of food they’re used to, as changing their schedule or food suddenly can upset their stomach.
GET OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW
Make sure everyone in the household is ready for a new pet before bringing one home. Figure out who will take care of different pet duties, such as walking the dog or cleaning the cat’s litter box. If there are already pets at home, talk to the shelter or adoption center about the best way to introduce them. Remember, it might take a few weeks for a new pet to feel comfortable in their new surroundings, so be patient.
Even if you’re seeking a specific breed, they’re often found in shelters through no fault of their own. Shelters nationwide are bursting at the seams with dogs and cats of every make and model. Here are some places to start the search!
