YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — On Saturday, Feb. 1, Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) posted a monthly update sharing what happened in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) during January. And according to Scientist-in-Charge Michael Poland, Steamboat Geyser could erupt any day.

Poland writes that minor eruptions at Steamboat Geyser continued throughout the month of January, which indicates the possibility of the geyser’s first major eruption of 2025 “in the coming days to weeks.” Read more about Steamboat, its eruption and possible dormancy here.

Poland also reports that the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, responsible for the operation and analysis of the Yellowstone Seismic Network, located 56 earthquakes in the YNP region in January. The largest of these minor earthquakes was a M3.7 that Poland confirms was the main shock of a sequence of 25 located earthquakes, including two foreshocks and 22 aftershocks.

Poland writes aftershock activity is ongoing, but YNP earthquake activity is currently at background levels.
