MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — July was especially busy in Yellowstone National Park (YNP), with an influx of people visiting the park’s features and wildlife. This week, YNP released its year-to-date visitation numbers, confirming that 2024 is one of its busiest years on record.

In July, the park hosted 992,352 recreation visits, which was up from last July’s 969,692 recreation visits.

So far this year, YNP has hosted a total of 2,626,091 recreation visits, which was slightly lower than 2021’s 2,668,765 visitations for the year to date. This year’s numbers top 2023’s 2,462,535 recreation visits to date.

The list below shows the year-to-date trend for recreation visits over the last several years (through July):

  • 2024 – 2,626,091
  • 2023 – 2,462,535
  • 2022 – 1,855,396 (The park was closed June 13 through June 21 due to the historic flood event. Three entrances opened on June 22.)
  • 2021 – 2,668,765
  • 2020 – 1,674,699 (The park was closed March 24 through May 17 due to COVID. Two entrances opened on May 18 and the remaining three opened on June 1.)
  • 2019 – 2,294,691
