MORAN, Wyo. — Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) performed a rescue this morning that serves as a teachable moment.
According to TCSAR, the team received a satellite SOS activation at 10:46 a.m. originating from Box Creek Trail, northwest of Turpin Meadows on Bridger-Teton National Forest land. Communicating with the party via the Garmin device that sent the SOS message, TCSAR discerned that a 23-year-old male out backpacking with friends was in distress due to a medical emergency. TCSAR’s short-haul helicopter team traveled to the scene while a backup ground team made its way over in vehicles.
“While flying over the location, the helicopter team needed several flight-overs before eventually spotting the reporting party beneath some trees,” TCSAR’s announcement states.
The helicopter landed nearby and volunteers helped the patient inside. After being flown back to TCSAR headquarters, the young man was transferred to a waiting Jackson Hole Fire/EMS ambulance.
“This incident brings to light a few friendly reminders that can help our team: If you are in need of help and are expecting a helicopter, please make yourself visible,” TCSAR’s announcement includes. “Wear bright colors and wave your arms when you see the ship approaching (but do not approach the ship as it is landing). Do not ever wave at a helicopter if you don’t need help. Lastly, all rescue services provided by TCSAR are free of charge. Our volunteers were happy to be able to assist this individual.”
