YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — This Women’s History Month, Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is celebrating its first female judge in Yellowstone’s 151 years of establishment.

Stephanie Hambrick was appointed Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court of Wyoming in Mammoth Hot Springs within YNP on April 11, 2022, following the retirement of Magistrate Judge Mark L. Carman.

Born and raised in Wyoming, Hambrick received a Bachelor of Science, Business Administration from the University of Wyoming in 1991. She earned her juris doctorate degree from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1994.

Hambrick commented on what it means to her to be the first female judge in the park’s history.

“It seems strange to be part of a generation of women doing a lot of ‘firsts’ in the legal profession, particularly in Wyoming,” Hambrick said. “Women have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. I admire other women pursuing their dreams and being the first of their kind, whatever it is. For example, just one year ago, Chief Ranger Sarah Davis retired after being Yellowstone’s first female chief ranger. All of these women inspire me.”

She's a lover of alliteration, easy-to-follow recipes and board games when everyone knows the rules. Her favorite aspect about living in the Tetons is the collective admiration that Wyomingites share for the land and the life that it sustains.
