WYOMING —Fifteen-year-old Sophie Petrie of Powell, Wyoming has been announced as the winner of this year’s Junior Duck Stamp Contest.
Her colored pencil rendition of a fulvous whistling duck was named the winner against 180 other entries. Submissions came from across the state, from Powell and Cokeville to Jackson.
Other notable winners include Stephen Williams, also of Powell, who created the runner-up Best of Show piece, a colored pencil rendition of a redhead; and Ari Groll, 8, of Cokeville, who won the Betty Nelson Artistic Promise Award for her colored pencil and crayon rendition of a trumpeter swan.
This year’s winning Wyoming Conservation Message was written by Grace Lengfelder, 14, of Powell.
“Conservation is important to me because the land and animals came before us, it’s only fair that we take care of their homes,” said Lengfelder.
Popular subjects of this year’s contest included trumpeter swans, green-winged teals and redheads. For a full gallery of winners, visit the National Elk Refuge’s Flickr album “2022 Wyoming Junior Duck Stamp.”
