JACKSON, Wyo. — Teton County Library (TCL) will host a free workshop on Saturday to teach attendees how to write op-eds and commentaries.

WyoFile’s deputy managing editor Tennessee Watson will lead “Writing for change: how to write impactful op-eds and commentaries.” The workshop intends to share the basics of opinion and commentary writing. Participants can expect to hear about things like conceptualizing effective ideas, pitching a piece to a media outlet and the publication aspect.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in TCL’s Ordway Auditorium from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 4. Registration is required through TCL’s website.

“Do you want people to take action to solve a problem?” TCL wrote in its class description. “Do you have a perspective that could help your neighbors approach a community issue in a new way, or have a reflection about the state of the world that you think is missing from the current conversation?”

Attendees are not required to come with writing ideas, but an open mind and a desire to learn will assist the creative process. The skills covered in the class can also apply to other writing genres such as cover letters, college essays and grant applications.

Before joining WyoFile’s team, Watson was a public radio reporter, documentary maker and media arts educator. WyoFile is an independent online news source that reports in-depth on Wyoming issues.
