WYOMING — A viral disease that often affects doves and pigeons, avian paramyxovirus, has recently been detected in Wyoming.

According to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD), Eurasian collared-doves have tested positive for the disease near Casper, Green River, Rock Springs and Riverton. Avian paramyxovirus can spread quickly in areas where birds gather and can cause die-offs in pigeon and dove populations.

“We detect this virus from time to time around the state,” WGFD wildlife disease biologist Liz Wheeler said via press release.

WGFD states that when birds are infected with this disease, they may show neurological symptoms, weakness, diarrhea, respiratory distress or sudden death.

Wheeler said that people can help control the spread of the disease by frequently disinfecting bird feeders and watering equipment, especially if doves are regularly present. WGFD recommends disinfecting with a 10% bleach solution.

Anyone who witnesses three or more dead birds together in the Jackson area is encouraged to notify the WGFD Jackson Regional Office at (307) 733-2321. Visit WGFD website for more information.
