WYOMING — The U.S. Forest Service and Smokey Bear are recognizing all wildland firefighters and support personnel in observance of National Wildland Firefighter Day on Wednesday, July 2.
The day of observance occurs during Wildland Firefighter Week of Remembrance, held from Sunday, June 30, to Saturday, July 6, which acknowledges the dedication of federal, state, local, Tribal, military, rural, contract and support personnel working in fire safety and management. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, the week is an opportunity to honor and remember the brave men and women who have risked their lives to protect communities and natural landscapes from devastating wildfires.
In support of wildfire personnel, Smokey Bear is sharing five tips to help prevent the ignition of a wildfire.
- Don’t leave a campfire unattended.
- Don’t leave coals until they’re doused and stirred until cold.
- Don’t burn dangerous things like aerosol cans, pressurized containers, glass or aluminum cans.
- Don’t let a vehicle’s tow chains drag.
- Don’t park a vehicle over tall, dry grass.
“Fire can spread quickly and be hard to control in high fire danger,” Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) wrote via Facebook. “Stay informed about critical fire weather in your area.”
Teton Interagency Fire reminds residents that recent fire conditions have been elevated to “high” in Grand Teton National Park, BTNF and the National Elk Refuge as of Tuesday, June 24.
