JACKSON, Wyo. — Two more moose were hit and killed over the weekend.
One was run into Saturday night on Teton Village Road (Highway 390) at a known hotspot. In fact, the dead moose was still lying at the side of the road near Nethercott Lane where a variable message sign flashes over its lifeless body reminding motorists to slow down.
Another moose was killed on WYO390 last month. While the entire stretch from the junction of WYO22 to Teton Village has been a veritable kill zone for moose, it is unusual to see them struck during the summer months.
In 2012, moose were being massacred in such alarming numbers on Teton Village Road a coalition was formed. WYDOT ended up lowering the nighttime speed limit from 45 to 35 mph, the county bought electronic message boards, and moose silhouette cutouts were erected all up and down the road. The problem abated somewhat but the road remains a favorite with moose and other wildlife.
SPET money is targeted for wildlife crossings as part of a Highway 22-390 re-design in 2022.
Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance’s Ryan Nourai said, “I drive [Highway] 390 almost every day. I’m so aggravated by so many things having to do with this road. Just the fact that this is still happening, as a person who commutes in this community, it’s really frustrating.”
One neighbor reported the dead moose of one of twins that has many local residents watched grow up all spring and summer. Carla Watsabaugh, who had a momma and twins in her yard for weeks, is hoping it isn’t one of them that was killed.
Meanwhile, a popular bull moose that often greeted visitors as they arrived at the airport by standing statuesque in the open fields alongside US 89 was also hit and killed over the weekend.
