WYOMING – Two passengers were killed in a collision with semi-tractor trailer on I-80 outside Green River over the weekend.
On March 2, a fatal crash occurred at milepost 85 on Interstate 80 west of Green River, Wyoming. Around 8:05am., Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to the area for a two-vehicle collision.
A 2002 Honda Odyssey van and a 2010 Peterbilt Conventional were traveling eastbound on Interstate 80. The Honda van lost traction on the ice and snow-covered roadway causing the Peterbilt to collide with the back of the Honda van.
There were six occupants in the Honda van including the driver. One of the passengers has been identified as 50-year-old Chico, California resident Shelly Dale Leon. Leon was wearing her seatbelt but later succumbed to her injuries sustained in the crash at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. A juvenile passenger in the Honda was not in a child restraint and succumbed to injuries at the scene. A second juvenile passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained injuries in the crash and was flown by helicopter to the University of Utah Hospital.
The driver of the Honda van has been identified as 28-year-old Moorland, Iowa resident Ashley Hiracheta. Hiracheta was wearing her seatbelt and transported to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County for injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver of the 2010 Peterbilt has been identified as 27-year-old Lathrop, California resident Helal Ghulam Majid. Majid was wearing his seatbelt and did not sustain injuries in the crash. The passenger in the Peterbilt was not injured.
Speeding too fast for winter road conditions are being investigated on the part of both drivers as a contributing factor to the crash. The road conditions were slick with ice and snow.
This is the 19th and 20th fatality on Wyoming’s highways in 2019 compared to 11 in 2018, 10 in 2017, and 8 in 2016 to date.
