JACKSON, Wyo. — The Town of Jackson is warning residents and local business owners about an email phishing scam that is making the rounds.

Suspicious emails asking recipients to confirm their business details for a supposed “Approved List of Town Businesses” are not originating from the real Town of Jackson. These are phishing emails designed to collect personal information. The Town warns recipients of these emails that they should not respond to them, nor should they click any links or attachments in the email.

“Unfortunately, in recent weeks and months we have seen more of these phishing schemes misrepresenting themselves as the Town of Jackson,” the Town of Jackson said via press release. “When we are made aware of such campaigns, we notify our IT and Police Departments and do our best to educate community members about keeping themselves and their private information safe online.”

When trying to determine if an email is legitimate, always consider the following:

  • Inconsistencies in email addresses, links or domain names.
  • Tone, grammar and urgency — read the email to see if any or all of these seem off.
  • If an email or link is unexpected, don’t open it. If it could be from a known contact, send a message via other means (text or phone) to see if it’s genuine.

Earlier this year, the Town warned residents of a similar phishing scam, when community members received suspicious emails from accounts posing as Town Council members about alleged “Business Operations and Code Violations.”
