JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The Wyoming Department of Transportation will be closing WYO 22 Teton Pass at 3:30pm today for avalanche work, which will include heli-bombing. Heli-bombing is a form of avalanche mitigation involving the placing of explosive charges, by helicopter, in strategic locations to bring down controlled avalanches. Crews are planning to drop about six charges at major slide areas.

“There has been some major movement in different areas on the pass and a few big slides already up there. We can’t wait any longer,” said Bruce Daigle, WYDOT maintenance foreman.

The closure duration could last only about 30 minutes, if everything goes smoothly. However, if the controlled avalanches sweep over the road—and depending on how wet and heavy the snow is—the closure could last hours into the evening. WYDOT is asking commuters to plan accordingly for the closure.

WYDOT will notify the public of the closure on our 511 text alerts, as well as when the road is open.
