WILSON, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has announced that Teton Pass (WY22 between mileposts 7 and 17) will be closed for avalanche mitigation beginning at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2.
Parking on the Pass will be prohibited beginning at 5 p.m.
“Reduced visibility, winter driving conditions and increasing avalanche hazard may force an earlier closure,” WYDOT’s announcement states. “Highway travelers and backcountry users are advised to plan accordingly. Thank you for your cooperation.”
Avalanche danger in the Tetons is “considerable” above 6,000 feet and “high” above 7,500 feet, according to the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center (BTAC). Conditions have evolved with the arrival of a major storm. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. on Monday.
“A winter storm will continue to bring heavy snow and very strong winds today,” according to BTAC’s Sunday forecast. “Wind slabs will increase in size and sensitivity at all elevations and are expected to release naturally this afternoon as winds increase and the heaviest snowfall is expected. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.”
Multiple avalanches closed Fall Creek Road in Wilson on Sunday morning.
