Teton Pass closed extra early for avy control

JACKSON, Wyo. — UPDATE: Teton Pass closed even early than expected. As of 1:18 p.m. today, Highway 22 from Wilson to Idaho is closed with no estimated reopening time.

High winds are wreaking havoc on Teton Pass this morning. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) just announced it will have to close the pass this afternoon to get moving on avalanche mitigation at 2.p.m today.

Anyone planning to ski or ride the pass today is asked to please changed plans. Anyone currently making turns is asked to wrap it up and get off the mountain.

WYDOT crews are currently working now to clear the parking areas for the closure. WYO 22 over Teton Pass will be closed to all traffic beginning at 2 p.m. today for these avalanche mitigation measures.

The sooner the highway department can get started, the sooner they can have the pass reopened. There is no estimated time of reopening.

US Highway 89 between Moose and Moran is designated with a “No Unnecessary Travel” restriction. This section of road is open to travel but is not recommended due to hazardous driving conditions, limited visibility and blowing snow.

Idaho-Wyoming commenters are also being advised that the “long way” around is not possible, either. Highway 31 in Idaho is currently closed between Swan Valley and Victor due to reduced visibility and drifting snow. So is Highway 26 between Swan Valley and Ririe.

START Bus commuters should prepare for disruptions to service. With Teton Pass closing for avalanche mitigation at 2 p.m. today and Pine Creek Pass in Idaho also currently closed, it is possible that the four buses may not be able to return to Idaho this evening. START Bus is urging commuters who rely on this bus service to plan accordingly for the possibility of no return service to Idaho this evening.

START recommends all commuter riders to keep an eye out on the upcoming weather and stay connected through WYDOT information and with START Bus through the online Rider Alert feature.
