JACKSON, Wyo. — Teton County will use a mobile game to collect information on road and path conditions in the county.

Starting on Friday, July 19 at 6 a.m., people will be able to play a game that incentivizes them to take videos of roads in the area. The game for pathways will begin on Friday, July 26 at 6 a.m.

The app, called Crowdsorsa, encourages users to collect virtual fruit that’s been superimposed over areas of pavement. Users can collect the fruit when they video that stretch of road or path. The fruit disappears once an area has been covered.

Fruit collected will translate into real money, and users will have a chance to win up to $20 per hour while playing the surveying game, Crowdsorsa CEO Toni Paju said in a press release.

The county will quality check the videos, and then artificial intelligence will analyze pavement in the footage to detect damage. This data will help the county determine what areas are most in need of maintenance resources.

“We are excited to use the latest technology to support data-driven asset management, and this is a fun way for the community to interact with and support infrastructure,” Charlotte Frei, Teton County Regional Transportation Planning Administrator, said in a statement.

The game requires that videos be taken hands-free while driving or biking, with phones affixed to a holder attached to the car windshield or bike handlebar. It can be downloaded at crowdsorsa.com.
