JACKSON, Wyo. — The Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) is performing prescribed fire operations in Star Valley this spring, making use of a unique tool.
“Forest firefighters are using a plastic sphere dispenser (PSD) for aerial ignitions for the prescribed burn,” BTNF posted to Facebook on Thursday, April 10. “This device launches ping-pong balls filled with a chemical mixture that ignites upon impact creating small spot fires to strategically reduce fuel loads to provide for public safety.”

The Greys River Ranger District of the BTNF is working on up to 2,500 acres Unit 2, which is within the Star Valley Front Vegetation Restoration Project.
“Smoke may be visible throughout the day,” BTNF noted. “Please do not report.”
Prescribed fire operations were underway on Thursday near Munger Mountain, as well. BTNF confirmed that about 45 acres of grass and sagebrush were ignited.
