JACKSON, Wyo. — The American Legion Post No. 43 held its annual Memorial Day observance on Jackson’s Town Square on Monday, May 25.

Local veterans gathered for their annual ceremony honoring the fallen.

The holiday dates back to 1868, three years after the Civil War ended, and was called Decoration Day as the nation decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers.

The event featured a colorful flyover this year.

The American Legion Rifle Salute begins on Town Square and then tours the county, stopping for salutes at Aspen Hill, South Park, and Elliot Cemeteries and at the Snake Rive Bridge in Wilson, according to the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce.
