JACKSON, Wyo. — It was a dark and stormy night, and Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer was sifting through the thousands of photos he has taken in Jackson Hole over the years.
What emerged was a collection of images that can turn the blood cold. It’s not all bucolic photos of baby moose here in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem; sometimes, a photo is worth a thousand spooky words. Take, for example, this photo of the full moon that looks straight out of “Dracula.”

Beware! That full moon might bring out the…..

WOLVES!

Is this one of the “children of the night” Count Vlad was talking about?

Some days, the clouds at sunrise or sunset turn blood red, making the scenery resemble an Edgar Allan Poe tale.

Speaking of blood-red, sometimes even the gentler giants in our area are sporting their own gore. Check out this bull moose in the process of rubbing the “velvet” off of his new set of antlers. Moose velvet is thin skin with a network of blood vessels. Blood flowing through those vessels deposits calcium that creates the antler.

The annual process is natural, but it can be a stomach-turning sight.
