Yellowstone National Park Press Release

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Yellowstone National Park (YNP) announced Friday that a “small and remote” wildland fire had been discovered about five miles south of the Park’s Northeast Entrance Road, 0.5 miles east of the Lamar River Trail in Lamar Valley.

The fire has been dubbed the Hitching Post Fire and is estimated to be 0.5 acres in size. The Park says it’s “smoldering in steep terrain.” Crews are still working to confine it, and YNP says it was likely ignited by lightning on Tuesday, July 25. There are no park closures due to the fire.

Yellowstone reminds visitors that fire danger level is “high” at the moment. Campfires are only permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites. Campfires must always be attended and cold to the touch before abandoning. Soak, stir, feel, repeat.

YNP’s first wildland fire of the 2023 season was discovered last week, on Saturday, July 22. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has experienced a number of fires recently due in part to increased thunderstorm and lightning activity.
