Yellowstone National Park Press Release

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Yellowstone National Park (YNP) has reported its first wildland fire of 2023.

According to YNP, a visitor detected a lightning-ignited 0.1-acre fire on Saturday, July 22, in the northern part of the Park between Little Cottonwood Creek and Hellroaring Mountain. The fire was suppressed by four smokejumpers based out of West Yellowstone, Montana. It has been named the Pup Fire.

Fire danger in YNP has been elevated to “high.” YNP says there are no active wildland fires in the park, and there are no fire restrictions in place or planned in the park. Campfires are only permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites.

Campfires must always be attended and cold to the touch before abandoning. Soak, stir, feel, repeat until it is out cold.
