JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton Climbers’ Coalition’s Safe Climbing Initiative (SCI) is offering a community education program in an effort to raise the community’s base level of climbing knowledge.
The program will consist of three series: beginner, intermediate and advanced. The beginner series will take place later in the winter for climbers looking to transition their experience outside.
SCI is a skills-based education program intending to raise the base level of climbing knowledge in our community and subsequently reduce “preventable accidents” and lessen demand on the Jenny Lake Rangers and Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR).
From Dec. 1, 2023, to Nov. 30, 2024, TCSAR dedicated 5,662 hours to rescues. They respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The Jenny Lake Rangers average 83 search and rescue missions every year.
Registration for the intermediate series opened on Nov. 4 while registration for the advanced series will open Dec. 16.
Classes in the intermediate series include anchor building, multi-pitch transitions and descents. Details about the advanced and beginner series will be released closer to their start dates.
Each two-hour clinic will have a 6-1 participant-to-instructor ratio and will cost $25. Financial assistance is available. Participants must hold a Recreation Center pass, bring their own equipment (or rent on-site) and have completed a lead belay test prior to attending.
