WYOMING – Mounting opposition to a proposed private immigration prison has taken the form of a campaign launched by #WyoSayNo.
A Utah-based private prison company called Management & Training Corporation (MTC) is proposing to build a 600-person ICE detention center in Uinta County as Immigration & Customs Enforcement has relied on such facilities to detain immigrants and their families.
This processing center would serve the Salt Lake City office of ICE. The office serves Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Montana.
In response to MTC’s proposal, #WyoSayNo is launching a campaign to stop the Uinta County Immigration Prison. An event is scheduled for Saturday, January 13 at 5:30pm in the Cottonwood Room of the Laramie County Public Library in Cheyenne, Wyo. #WyoSayNo organizers say the event will allow Wyomingites to learn more about the proposed Uinta County Immigration Prison, how immigration prisons affect Wyoming immigrants, and the actions they can take to “SAY NO” to an immigration prison in Wyoming.
MTC is the third-largest private prison company in the United States. It operates immigration prisons in California, New Mexico, and Texas. It was founded in 1966 and today employs more than 9,000 people.
#WyoSayNo will livestream the main launch event
