Killer hybrid fish helping to keep sucker population in check Upper North Crow Reservoir Hybrid Buckrail - Jackson Hole, news
Tiger muskies surviving a Wyoming winter. (WGFD)

WYOMING –Tiger muskies are a hybrid created by crossing northern pike and muskie. Tiger muskies are predatory and sterile, making them great as a management tool to reduce unwanted fish species, while diversifying fishing opportunities. Tiger muskies have been stocked in Upper North Crow Reservoir annually since 2015 to help reduce the abundant White Sucker and Longnose Sucker population.

Sampling revealed that sucker numbers have decreased between 2015 and 2017, but no tiger muskies were captured during those sampling events. The Laramie Fish Management Crew was unsure if they were surviving in the reservoir.

Following ice-out this spring, we sampled for one week and collected more than 50 Tiger muskie between 9 and 20 inches. All appeared to be in good condition. It’s great news to report that tiger muskies are surviving in Upper North Crow Reservoir and should now provide anglers in southeast Wyoming a unique fishing opportunity.
