JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Police Department (JPD) has announced the expansion of its license plate reader (LPR) program, which will capture images of license plates and vehicles able to be read by computers.

JPD said in the announcement that the new LPR cameras will allow the agency to scan plates to see if they match stolen cars, amber alerts or “wanted individuals in crime databases. This technology will help law enforcement solve crimes both proactively and after crimes are committed.”

The program was approved by the Town Council in June. According to JPD, the cameras do not include facial recognition capabilities and do not capture personally identifiable information. JPD has used LPRs since 2015 to enforce parking restrictions.

The agency has already installed 17 of the new LPRs, with 11 more to be installed “in coming weeks.” Officers will be required to complete training before accessing data from the LPR system, both with Flock Safety, the company facilitating the cameras, and internally to understand the town’s LPR policy.

Data from the LPR system, which will be stored for 90 days, will be available to the public via Flock Safety’s Transparency Portal, JPD said.

“Jackson’s Police Department looks forward to having this additional tool to bolster its efforts to continue keeping everyone in our community safe,” JPD said in a statement.
