JACKSON, Wyo. — Town Councilor Jonathan Schechter has thrown his hat into the ring and will seek a third term in office in the upcoming general election.

In a press release, Schechter stated that he made the decision to run again because of a desire to continue serving his community. He commented on Jackson facing challenges that are more prevalent and significant today than when he was first elected.

“I think we are going into an exceptionally volatile time in Jackson’s history,” Schechter told Buckrail. “It certainly is more volatile than when I was first elected eight years ago.”

Schechter said that much of the volatility stems from Jackson functioning as a “21st-century community with 20th-century systems.”

“Our geographic boundaries have been becoming less important,” Schechter said. He pointed to issues such as housing supply, traffic and ecological impact.

He explained that housing was once more closely tied to the local economy and Jackson’s geographic isolation. Advances in technology and broader economic changes since COVID-19 have diminished the role geography once played. According to Schechter, the importance of geography “has essentially been wiped out.”

Schechter has held public office for about 16 years, serving two four-year terms on the St. John’s Health Board and then Town Council from 2018 until present.
