JACKSON, Wyo. — To help people avoid falling down on slippery ice, Jackson Hole Fire/EMS shared Good Samaritan Society tips for navigating the currently slick conditions on the roads, parking lots and sidewalks.

Jackson Hole Fire/EMS wrote on Facebook on Tuesday, Feb. 4, that ice falls are its “highest call for service” during these icy conditions.

Here are recommendations to stay upright this winter:

  • When it’s icy, don’t go out unless needed.
  • Use ice melt and sand on sidewalks and driveways. If this isn’t available use non-clumping kitty litter.
  • Use footwear that can grip the ice or detachable ice cleats.
  • Wear a hat, gloves and a bulky coat to cushion a fall.
  • Be aware of the surroundings. If it looks icy, avoid that area if possible.
  • If ice is unavoidable, slow down and shorten walking stride. Keep hands out of coat pockets to help with balance, and use handrails whenever possible.
  • Don’t carry things in front of one’s line of vision. Instead, wear a backpack or hold items by one’s side to lower center of gravity.
  • When getting out of a vehicle, use multiple points of contact. Grip the car’s door frame and either the steering wheel or the handle on the car’s frame.
  • Do exercises that work on balance including yoga, pilates and tai chi.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation also shared recommendations for driving during icy conditions.
