GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK — As the area’s mountains continue to thaw out, the Jenny Lake Rangers are notifying the visiting public about closures and current conditions.
The Jenny Lake Rangers are an elite team of search and rescue professionals in Grand Teton National Park (GTNP). The team posted to social media over the weekend to alert recreationists about a wildlife closure near Jenny Lake and about snowy trail conditions near Delta Lake.
On Friday, the rangers said the Baxter’s Pinnacle climbing route just west of Jenny Lake is temporarily closed to protect nesting peregrine falcons. Also closed are the surrounding cliffs and the approach route to the climb, which is a social trail that emerges from the horse trail. The nearby route No Perches Necessary remains open.
“This closure is necessary to protect nesting peregrine falcons and their young,” reads the social media post. “Please help us protect these incredible raptors by respecting the closure area and staying off the pinnacle.”
On Sunday, the Jenny Lake Rangers posted to let visitors know that Delta Lake is still frozen and will remain so for a while. The trail to Delta Lake is also still covered with snow. “Navigation and snow skills and equipment required,” the post reads.
Those recreating outdoors at this time of year should be prepared with extra layers for changes in the weather, and should be aware of their surroundings as spring bear activity ramps up.
