Wait, Back Up
What’s a Via Ferrata? The term Via Ferrata (Italian for “Iron Road”) dates back to the days of World War I. The world’s first and original Iron Road was constructed in the Dolomite mountains of northeastern Italy. Its design consisted of permanent cables fixed to rock and ladders for navigating up steep terrain. These routes allowed soldiers to quickly and safely travel over the mountain.
Fast Forward
Today, Via Ferratas have sprouted up across the world, offering an exhilarating and memorable experience for both the novice and experienced of climbers. Modern design offers a variety of difficulty levels and routes through ladders, bridges and cables.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is excited to announce that Wyoming’s first Via Ferrata will open to the public this summer!
JHMR’s Via Ferrata takes you high above the valley floor, across suspended bridges and along granite walls, all with a knowledgeable guide. This assisted climbing activity is perfect for families, groups or individuals.

Jackson’s newest outdoor experience is scheduled to open late June.
For the last year JHMR has been busy installing cables and testing the loops with experienced climbers and guides. Routes will be opening mid-June or as soon as the snow melts.
This summer, there will be three different loops located in Casper Bowl area adjacent to the Bridger Gondola. All routes varying in difficulty from an introductory climb to more difficult routes. There are eight routes, the four longest are 500 vertical feet high, ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging.
- Approach Loop – This “Practice Area” is a very basic area, close to the top of the gondola, where you will learn how to operate the equipment, and basic climbing etiquette.
- Ranger Ridge Loop – Ascend one of 2 Ranger Ridge routes and cross the spectacular suspension bridge. Time and skill will determine your next route.
- Casper Buttress Loop – This area is on the northern end of Casper Bowl. It boasts the most difficult routes we currently have.
