BIG PINEY, Wyo. — The Horse Fire on Bridger-Teton National Forest’s (BTNF) Big Piney Ranger District is burning on 1,465 acres of heavy, dry timber, according to a Thursday update by BTNF.

Fire personnel totaling 236 people are working against warmer, drier conditions in the area. According to InciWeb, firefighters along the fire’s southern perimeter will focus on holding the lines and firing pockets of unburned material that could threaten established lines. Firefighters along the northern perimeter will evaluate shifting winds to find areas for firing off indirect lines. Containment is holding steady at 6%.

“Expect sunny skies with a high of 81°F and a low of 49°F,” InciWeb posted on Thursday. “Winds will be coming from the southwest at around 12 mph, and the chance of precipitation is very low at just 3%. Relative humidity will dip as low as 14%, which could contribute to dry conditions.”

BTNF implemented a closure surrounding the fire area earlier this week. On Tuesday, Teton Interagency Fire elevated the local fire danger to “moderate.”
