BIG PINEY, Wyo. — The Horse Fire, which is burning on the Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) Big Piney Ranger District, has grown to 2,797 acres and is 70% contained, according to an update from BTNF on Sunday, July 6.
Firefighters on scene are reinforcing containment lines and extinguishing hotspots. Crews have been finding and addressing heat sources through infrared flight mapping and are working to keep the fire from spreading beyond the established perimeter.
According to the update, muddy conditions from recent rain are presenting challenges while crews evaluate areas for repair and restoration. In the South Horse Creek Drainage, trail restoration efforts have been underway along the heel of the fire, where crews are repairing impacted terrain.
“With rain increasing the risk of injury and unstable footing, firefighter safety remains the top priority,” BTNF wrote in the update.
The Sunday update stated that 69 personnel were fighting the blaze. As of Monday, July 7, at 6 a.m., the local unit began transitioning back to take control of the Horse Fire.
“The Wyoming Type 3 Teams extend their sincere appreciation to the community for its continued support during the response to the Horse Fire,” BTNF wrote.
Over the past week, BTNF has seen numerous lightning strikes, and firefighters are patrolling for new ignitions and preparing to begin suppression efforts as needed. When lightning strikes, it can leave behind smoldering pockets that can develop into wildfires days later.
The Prospect Peak Lookout Tower’s fire-resistant wrap will remain in place through the rest of the 2025 fire season, “ensuring continued safety and preservation.”
