MORAN, Wyo. — Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) warned drivers on Tuesday, Feb. 11, to be alert for bison on the road on Highway 26/89/191.

According to the post, bison are currently migrating south for the winter, crossing the highway in the S-curves between Triangle X Ranch and Snake River Overlook. Deep snow makes roads the easiest travel route for these mammals.

“Let’s work together to protect our wildlife and ensure the safety of everyone on the road,” GTNP writes. “Your actions can make a difference!”

GTNP asks drivers to do the following:

  • Slow Down: Reduce speed in wildlife corridors, especially at night.
  • Be Patient: If bison are crossing, wait for the herd to pass before proceeding.
  • Avoid Distractions: Keep the focus on the road.
  • Report Sightings: Call Park dispatch (307-739-3301) if bison are on the road so staff can help guide them safely.

The NPS encourages visitors to remain in a vehicle when encountering bison and prohibits approaching or feeding all wildlife species in the Park.
