JACKSON, Wyo. — Starting Monday, Sept. 21, until Wednesday, Sept. 23, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) will be installing upgraded signage along WY22 on Teton Pass. Crews will actively be working on the changes between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The announcement comes after a third fatality on Teton Pass this summer.

According to a Friday press release, the new additions will include “Must Stop Brake Check” signs at the summit and “No Parking” signs at the gravel escape ramp and runaway vehicle systems. Existing signs that remind drivers to stay in low gear and warn motorists of steep grades and sharp curves will be changed to read “All Vehicles” rather than only “Truckers.”

“We have about 50 signs from the state line to Wilson informing drivers of steep grades and to use low gear. WYDOT is currently working on reviewing the rest of the signs and their placement,” said District 3 Traffic Engineer Darin Kaufman.

WYDOT is also creating diagrammatic signs to illustrate roadway grades and restrictions and alternate routes drivers can take. Those signs will be installed at the weigh station, the state line and the turnout at the summit.

The sign upgrades have been planned for weeks, and WYDOT has been waiting for them to be made to install them.

WYDOT shared that drivers can be active participants in making Teton Pass safer by always wearing a seat belt, slowing down and obeying posted speeds, using a lower gear when descending steep grades, and abstaining from using phones while driving.
